In recent years, the Police Association, which looks after the interest of police officers below the rank of Inspector, has been making the news. That's mostly due to legal fights which happened between Police Commissioner Chester Williams and the Past President, Corporal Eldon Arzu.
But, these elections happen every year, and the current incumbent, Chairman of the Board of the Association, Sergeant Jermaine Hyde, and his slate of candidates are hoping to become elected once again.
This morning, the press got a chance to speak with him about this year's elections, which are taking place this week.
He told us that initial indications are that the voter turnout among serving officers who can vote is low:
We also asked Hyde if he will be able to serve as Chairman of the Board this year. That's because of the change of regulation promoted by Commissioner of Police Chester Williams' which prevents a chairman from serving more than 2 terms in office. That same change became the source of a major legal battle between him and Corporal Eldon Arzu, and so, we asked if Hyde is in danger of violating it:
We'll tell you about the results of the election as soon as they become available.
