And after all you've heard in this council back - and - forth you might be asking yourself why they're getting so worked up over garbage.

But if you'd hear Goodin tell it, he's fighting off that last straw that, he believes, could just push many more city residents into poverty:

Cherisse Halsall
"Now, we've seen the posts from yourself and from councilor Deannie Requena where you've gone completely against the Mayor's garbage fee and in both of your opinions it seems that you believe that the people of the city just can't handle another bill, tell me about that?"

Micah Goodin - Councilor, Belize City
"As policy makers it is important, it is imperative that we first consult with our people, they are the most important stakeholders in what we are here to do and so in my brief interactions with residents of Fort George and Pickstock and Lake Independence as well as these other constituencies across the city. They felt that at this particular time the proposed garbage tax is implemented would further strain their financial position and so it is with that we have decided that collectively as a group that we would separate ourselves from that garbage tax. We are just standing on the side of the residents. So many people are poverty stricken, so many people have not yet recovered from the financial effects of covid, so many families have been torn a part, so many people unemployed and so that really is the basis for this, there are no hidden agendas, no secret motives, nothing like that."
