
The government is pushing on with its plan to install Moises Cal as the Chairman of the Public Service Commission - despite the significant taint on his reputation owing to a significant allegation of money laundering.
As we reported, in February of 2007, the former Belizean diplomat allegedly flew into Panama's Tocumen Airport with over one million U.S. dollars in a suitcase. Cal was detained, and allegedly paid a bribe and left Panama before police there could question him. At the time, Cal used a diplomatic passport and presented himself as a diplomat - which he was not.
But, the Prime Minister has informed that Leader of the Opposition that he plans to appoint Cal to the constitutionally enshrined post for a two year term - coming at the start of this month.
The UDP has issued an official statement stating its, quote, "It is baffling how Prime Minister Briceno could deem Cal a person of ethical and moral character worthy of leading the public service board when he has such an ignominious public record."
