Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have all officially declared King Charles III as their head of state following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Belize has yet to declare its own position - whether it will remain in the Commonwealth or if it will move past the monarchy.

And according to the PM, there needs to be consultations before this important decision is made, but the legislation itself referring to "her majesty the queen" cannot be changed until parliament can meet - and that cannot happen until after the mourning period is over.

But for the time being, on Saturday, PM John Briceno told us that King Charles III is "automatically" the head of state.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister

"It will automatically happen. We are still a part of the commonwealth and the monarchy is still the head of state, obviously it will happen. But as I said, we have the political constitutional commission that we want to the pass the legislation, we were going to do it on Friday but because of being in mourning, parliament cannot be. We have to wait until after the 21st to have the House Meeting, after the mourning period finished but we want to pass the legislation and to get that work going and the whole idea is for to be able to throw idea to the Belizean people to look at the constitution, see where we can improve, what changes we need to do, look at whether we still want to keep, well in this case, King Charles, as the head of state or do we want to abolish that, do we want to go strictly republican or a high breed between republican or the parliamentary system, that's what we want to do, to give an opportunity to Belizeans to sit back, to listen, to research, to reflect and see what we can do in the national interest, how we can govern ourselves better, how is it that we can be able to respond to the need of our country and our people."
