Cabinet met yesterday and there are a few items of note coming out of the meeting.
First, a press release says the Minister of Agriculture was directed to "convene a meeting with importers and suppliers to discuss ways to reduce the cost of major food items." Last we heard it was supposed to happen in April.
And, following up on a 7 News story this week which found that in some cases, GST was still being charged on feminine hygiene products, quote, "Cabinet requested that the Financial Secretary instruct the Belize Tax Services Limited to check into businesses that continue to charge tax on feminine products. These became GST-exempt effective 1st April with a grace period of one month for products that were already in stock to be depleted." End quote.
And, Cabinet also talked about Boledo which has been suspended since April 31st when Brads license was cancelled. Well no date for a replacement is in sight!
The Cabinet brief says, quote, "Cabinet continued the discussion on the establishment of the Belize Government Lotteries Ltd., a government-owned company, and approved the introduction of amendments to the Lotteries Act to accommodate for government to sell lotteries nationwide." These amendments will be introduced at tomorrow's sitting of the House of Representatives.
