And maritime women from the Belize Coast Guard have spent the last month gearing up for Wonder Woman, their annual competition that tests their mental and physical strength. It's been on a pandemic pause for the past two years, but that doesn't mean this year will be easy. The women will have to swim, run, climb, and more in a grueling competition where only one team can win. Today, Ensign Officer, Loany Ruiz told us more about it.
Loany Ruiz, Ensign Officer, Belize City Coast Guard

"We have been training for a month, a month and a half for the competition, which will be the 29th, 30th and 31st. It is a 3 day event. It starts gradually and as the days progress, it gets harder. It tests your physical and mental capabilities. We do land and we also do sea challenges. It is important that we have these types of competitions."
"One, it keeps us in shape. Two, it proves to everyone that we can do everything that the males can do. And when we are out there in the field, we get to experience some of the same things. You need to be in that physical standard. You need to have that mental capacity to endure whatever it is you're enduring out there."
"For example, the one mile swim. You never know what could happen out there. And you have to actually swim a mile in the rough seas. So basically it falls hand in hand with what we do out there. And it just tests our mental and physical readiness."
The Wonder Woman competition takes place on the 29th, 30th and 31st.
