Tonight, the Phillip Goldson highway is opened to regular traffic and there is an uneasy peace prevailing in the north. That's because the Prime Minister was forced to cancel his personal leave and an official trip to meet the pope at the Vatican - so that he could come home to solve the sugar crisis.

7News met him at the airport where he said he was disappointed in the outcome - because when he left on Saturday the agreement was ready to sign:

John Briceno, Prime Minister

"I think it's a very important issue. I must say that I'm disappointed that it was not resolved. On Friday night I thought that we had an agreement. And it was Saturday when I was already leaving on the plane that I found out that there was several other issues came up."

"The team, Minister Mai, and his team they worked through the weekend. They could not find a compromise. So I felt that it is more important. I'd love to meet the Pope. It's a wonderful opportunity. It is a man that I admire greatly."

"But this is more important at this moment. And that's why I'm here. And I think I have a proposal that I hope that it will work."
