But the PUP candidate, Matthew Preston, said quite the same, that townspeople have been supporting his slate. And yesterday he also told us that his grand uncle - Hector Silva, whose footsteps he's following in, was his nominator.

Matthew Preston, PUP Mayoral Candidate

"Nomination Day was really nice, it was historic. Three years ago, we did it, that time it was as a councillor, and this time I was nominated as the mayoral candidate for the People's United Party. The historic part of it was my great uncle, he was the first mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, and he nominated me on that day and the feeling out there, we've been through the neighborhoods, to many homes and people are inviting us into their homes, people are seeing that we have new energy coming, we have new faces and they believe that with this new generation, we can bring San Ignacio/Santa Elena into the new era and it's time for these new ideas and we believe with the PUP 7, we can bring that progress that San Ignacio and Santa Elena deserves."

We note that the Cayo campaign has been especially vicious and a look from the ground shows major sign vandalism on both side. That's probably because Cayo is ground zero for both parties: the UDP see it - ore than any other municipality as a MUST-WIN, while the PUP sees it as a total back breaker for the UDP - and a municipality they can reclaim after decades of UDP control. We'll know in 8 days who's right and who's wrong.
