The Public Service House Committee met today in Belmopan to consider the Representation of the People Bill of 2024. The Belize Peace Movement presented a strong objection to the bill saying that if implemented it would maintain and effectively normalize extreme Malapportionment, which is, quote, "antithetical to democratic governance and violates our fundamental right to Vote in free and fair elections. It is "ethically unjustifiable". End quote.
They ask for, quote, "an urgent and special sitting of the House at earliest possible, and to run this bill through all three readings on the very same day and in the best interest of our democracy, reject this Bill."
The UDP's Leader Shyne Barrow also sent a letter of objection saying, quote,
"The most glaring examples of irregularities, gerrymandering, Constitutional violations are, the task force recommendation that we go 25% above or below the average size of a Constituency rather than adhere to the best practice global norm of 15%."
Barrow has also called for the bill to be quickly passed through the house and rejected.
