After their letters to the Minister of Sustainable Development went un-answered, the Association of Protected Areas Management Organizations went public on a media offensive with qa press conference and morning show appearances.
Well, they got the attention of the Prime Minister who intervened and yesterday hosted a meeting with APAMO's executive members.
A release says that they agreed "to establish a working group comprising representatives from both the government and conservation non-governmental organizations." This group will spearhead the revision of the National Protected Areas Systems Act and the Protected Areas Conservation Trust Act.
The release adds, quote, "The Prime Minister reaffirmed his unwavering commitment and dedication to addressing the concerns and fulfilling the agreed-upon tasks that will result in further enhancing the relationship between the conservation community and the Government of Belize." End quote.
The group has a timeline of three months.
