Tonight, the pushback against the government for purchasing 15 acres of land for a University Hospital is growing. The National Trade Union Congress of Belize - which has a seat on the UB Board - today wrote a letter of objection to the chairman of the board of Trustees, Godfrey Smith.
It says the decision to move the 90 million dollar hospital from the UB campus, quote, "was made without meaningful consultation with key stakeholders, including our organization."
Chairman Luke Martinez adds, quote, "We are deeply disappointed by this development, as it undermines the principles of good governance and raises serious concerns about transparency and accountability in the management of public funds." End quote.
He calls on the board to, quote, "take a proactive stance in holding the government accountable for this decision…" and calls for an urgent board meeting. The letter concludes, quote, "It is vital that we examine the implications of the government's actions and ensure they align with our shared commitment to good governance and public accountability."
