And while Belize is toeing the line between its two allies - the USA and Venezuela - it is also concerned for Taiwan and the threats they now face from China. But while Belize has condemned China's claim over Taiwan, and aligned itself with Taiwan's right to self-determination, it has not condemned the US's actions in Venezuela. The media asked Fonseca about the stark contrast:

Francis Fonseca, Minister of FAFT

"Those are very important issues. Certainly we condemn, Taiwan is our ally, and our friend, in this case, you know, we have, as you all know, we have very good relations with both countries, Venezuela and the United States of America. So we try to work with both of them. We try to work with both of them. We try to understand their position. They have offered some explanations for what they are doing, in Venezuela. So it's not a question of condemning. It's a question of how do we resolve the current situation and how do we move forward, to ensure, as I keep saying, that the will of the Venezuelan people prevails in terms of the future of Venezuela."
