And does Minister Usher agree with the sentiment that supporting the proposed acquisition is, essentially, political suicide, considering how many social partners have voiced their opposition? Well, once again, he didn't give a straight answer - but rather put the onus of the decision on the BTL board.
Henry Charles Usher, Minister of the Public Service
"I think that it is important again for the people to hear all of the issues and not make the misinformation sometimes or the lack of information sometimes leads persons to come up to I would say a position is not as informed as it should be but I think it is important that we listen to what the people have to say and that the decision is made by the social security board and by the BTL board it is not a decision for the government of Belize."
Reporter:
"Sir but the chamber is saying that there has not been sufficient information provided even after BTL has presented to them."
Henry Charles Usher, Minister of the Public Service
"Well I think if that is the chambers position then you know we have to respect that position but I sent know what all was proved to them."
Reporter:
"It appears that the SSB is saying likewise because they are doing their due diligence because the sufficient financial information has not been provided to them likewise."
Henry Charles Usher, Minister of the Public Service
"Same answer that is their prerogative to make that statement but I don't know what was presented to them."
Reporter:
"So then if we lack so much information why is the government doggedly going ahead with approving this saying yes it is a business decision?"
Henry Charles Usher, Minister of the Public Service
"Marisol please don't make a statement that is not true, the government is not approving anything. I think it is important that this is done the right way I said when I was first asked this that it should have happened at the very beginning that this consultation process that this information, these information sessions are carried out so that people understand this position. It is for the shareholders it is for the directors to make the deacon don't try to confuse people by saying that government is making a decision. That is not professional."
