Last night the Caye Caulker Village Council held a community meeting where they introduced a petition regarding their seafront land, which they expected to be the home of a brand new police station. It's been three days since they started protesting and they don't plan to stop. But more so, they say they haven't heard from their area rep.
Well, that's because he's been out of the country. Even though he briefly returned home, he went on sick leave and had to travel again.
However, this evening, he spoke to us via phone and explained that the land has not been sold and the title has not been transferred. He clarified that in fact, they only received an offer, which is why the work stopped, to give them time to consider and consult.
But he believes the village council jumped the gun without having all the information.
But that property is being called "communal land" since, decades ago, the island's Alamina Family gave it to the government for the specific purpose of erecting a police station on it. So we asked Minister Perez if he has considered this.
Perez added that he plans to speak with the village council today.
