Today, 4 special athletes who performed at the Special Olympics in shanghai came home to a hero's welcome. They earned three bronze and one gold medal, and the Director of Special Olympics Belize Akintade Atkins told us why the accomplishment must be celebrated.
Akintade Atkins,
"At this time seeing our athletes coming back home after competing alongside 7,500 athletes from almost 170 countries and bringing back one gold and three bronze medals is enough cause for us to celebrate. Besides the winning of the medals, the spirit of sharing, courage, and joy that the Special Olympics movement preaches is enough cause for us to celebrate at this point in time.
They are role models and of course the thing that we teach in Special Olympics is that we want to bring persons with intellectual disabilities into the society under conditions where they are accepted, respected, and given enough chance and opportunities to become useful and productive citizens."
After being received at the airport by the Minister of Sports, they were taken on a motorcade throughout the city.
