Belize’s national football selection has a new head coach. Today Football Federation of Belize President Dr. Bertie Chimilio confirmed to 7NEWS that they have contracted the services of Ian Mork to coach the team as it heads into June’s World Cup battle against Mexico in Houston.
Mork is no stranger to Belize. In 2006 he coached the under 21 and under 17 national football teams. Mork is an American from San Francisco. He arrives in Belize on Thursday.
Mork replaces Guatemalan Palmiro Salas. He led the team to victory again St. Kitts in Guatemala in round one of the World Cup qualifiers. He didn’t travel with the team on the return leg in St. Kitts because he couldn’t get a U.S. visa. He was given time to regularize his status but so far he hasn’t.
Chimilio says Mork is the interim coach and noted for us that it is nothing new for a national team to hire a new coach before a big game. He says Mexico, Belize’s opponent on June 15th, has similarly hired a coach specifically for that game.
