He was the first Belizean to play in the NBA where he had a 7 year career, and, now, Milton Palacio will be the first Belizean to get a coaching job in the world's premier basketball league.
On Monday it was announced that Palacio had been hired as one of the assistant coaches for the Portland Trail Blazers under new head coach Chauncey Billups.
Billups, the former NBA champion and perennial all-star developed a friendship with Palacio from his college days when they attended different universities in Colorado.
And, when Billups got his first head coaching job - he called up Milton who has been coaching in the NBA's developmental G-league.
Today, via phone from Portland, Milton told Jules Vasquez how it all came together:
Other assistant coaches include former head coach, Scott Brooks. Palacio most recently was an assistant coach with the Long Island Nets in the the NBA G League. He has also, of course, coached Belize's national team on two occasions - a team he led to a CARICOM championship in 1998.
