For the first time in 17 years, Belize City can claim a Premier Football League Champion. Last night at the Norman Broaster field in San Ignacio, "Port Layola FC" bested Verdes FC with a dramatic goal to claim the championship.
There was jubilation in the stands - so much so that it caused fans to break the chain link fence around the field. The team today issued an apology for that joyous indiscretion, saying "This act of over-celebration, while born out of excitement, was reckless and not representative of the beautiful game we play, nor of Port Loyola FC, our wider fan base, or the people of Belize City. …we take full responsibility for the behavior of our supporters. We would like to formally and publicly apologize for the damage caused to the fence during the celebration.
Port Loyola FC is committed to covering all expenses related to the repair of the damaged portion of the fence. We extend our gratitude to the Verdes organization and the wonderful people of San Ignacio Cayo for being gracious hosts and understanding in light of this incident."
