You can un-cross those fingers or give those rosary beads a little rest, because the hurricane season is over and, again, Belize was spared. While forecasters predicted that this season would have been an above average year, but, lucky for us, it turned out to be one of the less active seasons.
There were a total of 9 named storms: 5 became hurricanes and two: reached category three intensity. Scientists say that the below average hurricane season is attributed to the sudden appearance of the El Nino phenomenon which changes the atmospheric circulation around the world. This suppresses tropical cyclone activity in our region. The El Nino phenomenon is expected to last for another three months.
Forecasters are now predicting wetter cold fronts making their way over the country over the next three months.
