The press also asked the Chief Meteorologist to discuss the freak storm that struck Lake Independence in Belize City. As we told you, they are not tornados, as Belizeans sometimes refer to them. Instead, they are known as microbursts, and a number of these strange storms have hit different parts of the country.

Here's what Gordon had to say on that topic:

Ronald Gordon - Chief Meteorologist

"In terms of other impacts, apart from the rainfall, we had very gusty winds of 15 to 25 knots with the system. We also had severe thunderstorms developing, and one of those thunderstorms resulted in what we referred to as a microburst affecting portions of the Belize City area, whereby you have these sudden surges of wind coming down, hitting the surface of the ground and spreading out very rapidly. That resulted in, of course, some damage to some structures. I believe there was roof damage, for the most part, and the downing of power lines in that area as well."

Later in the news, we'll have a little more from the NEMO Press conference, which finished at around 5:00.
