Last night southern Belize was plunged into darkness during a blackout that lasted from 7:30 to 9:00. Well, today the utility announced that it's because their Mexican supplier CFE was forced to cut them off. BEL says as a result it had to start load shedding various feeders in Belmopan, San Pedro and in the South in order to stabilize their power supply.

The release further details, quote "CFE has had to limit the energy supplied to Belize due to generation supply constraints. In such circumstances, BEL relies on in-country generation capacity to meet local demand. However, if demand on the grid exceeds local generation supply, power interruptions then become necessary to maintain grid stability."

"BEL expects that the curtailments of supply from Mexico will continue throughout the next few months and may increase further into the future."

So, bottom line on that? Prepare for the distant possibility of more outages.
