And while GOB is trying to close that deal - credible reports reaching 7NEWS is that another pact is about to fall apart.
7NEWS has learnt that government has made known its intention to fully authorize a terminal for Carnival Cruise lines at the Port of Belize. That's not exactly breaking news; it had been announced in the budget speech. But at the time government said it would do so while keeping its legal obligation to Royal Caribbean cruise lines, the owners of the existing Fort Point Tourist Village.
It appears now that the legal obligation to Royal Caribbean is out the door - as talks have reportedly fallen apart, and government has decided to give Carnival the green light - and "who noh like soh," well, sue.
According to the terms of a 15-year exclusive license that Royal Caribbean bought from Michael Feinstein, it has the exclusive right to disembark all cruise passengers in the Belize district up to the year 2017. The new carnival deal will run directly afoul of that.
