It's an institution that can hardly afford embezzlement - but the University of Belize has a senior swindle on its hands.
The University of Belize says $116,000 was stolen and last month they fingered an employee Mohammed Kamruzzaman as the culprit. But the university is only able to prove or at least allege that he stole $1,495 - less than 10% of the amount's that's actually missing.
The 29-year-old suspended UB staffer today appeared in court where he was read charges of theft. His attorney Lutchman Sooknandan was outraged today telling a magistrate that the police need to make up their mind. Sooknandan says his client was originally booked for stealing $116,000 and then today they changed it to the $1,495. Sooknandan also complained that while UB didn't fire his client, the administration hasn't been paying him the half-pay he is due.
Kamruzzaman was released on 4 thousand dollars bond plus two sureties in the same amount. Conditions of the bail are that he Kamruzzman who is not a Belizean surrender his passport and report to the clerk of court twice a week. He returns to court on May 7th.
