The new Guatemalan government has been installed but Belize and Guatemala still do not have a new agreement on confidence building measures.
It's a request that was first tendered by the government of Belize 90 days ago and we today asked Minister of foreign affairs Hon. Godfrey Smith what's the status.
Hon. Godfrey Smith,
"Well the confidence building measures under the old agreement expired on February 7th of this year. When the Prime Minister was in Guatemala for inauguration of the new president I accompanied him and at that point we gave a letter to the foreign minister of Guatemala informing him about the process and telling him the confidence would expire. We invited him join us in asking the OAS to expand it to 90 days-three months from February 7th. We are glad to report they have acceded to that, they extend the confidence building measures. Why another three months? Well because it's a new government and we need to give them time to look over their perspective and we think that three months is enough and we will revisit after that."
