It's that time of year when fishermen are known to make record hauls of one of the largest types of fish found in Belizean water. The heftiest member of the Grouper Family of fish is the Jewfish and this morning this morning fishermen from Belize City were once again good enough to pull up an estimated 300 pounder off the coast of Belize City. We were at the Sandlighter's Promenade this afternoon as the men were making fillet of the prized catch.
Alfonso Noble,
Where were you fishing?
Fisherman,
"About half mile from land or so."
Alfonso Noble,
When you went out there did you expect to catch a Jewfish?
Fisherman,
"No this is not something that you go out there and say you will bring in one, it is just luck. We are fishing for big fish so we use big bait."
Alfonso Noble,
What were you expecting to catch?
Fisherman,
"Well dah Jewfish you catch. We went to look for a Jewfish. Its for business, we catch it for business. We are fishermen. This is not something you catch every time."
Alfonso Noble,
How much money you expect to make off of this?
Fisherman,
"About $500. We sell it in parts. We sell the head, the bone, the meat and so; by parts. A pound with the bone is for $3 and the fish fillet is $8."
The fishermen say they usually sell fish at the very location where they were preparing the fish this afternoon.
