And while Sergeant Aguilar was not in Guatemalan custody, two Belizeans were. The news is that a couple of BEL employees were this weekend deported from Guatemala City.
Distribution technicians Oswaldo Cob and Brian Smith left Belize on Thursday to get Canadian visas to travel to that country on company business. They got the visas and on Saturday they were at the Guatemala City International Airport attempting to leave for Canada when immigration officials in Guatemala detained them.
The claim was that the Belizean passports and the U.S. visas that were in the passports were not authentic. Contact was made with the Belize Embassy in Guatemala and the men were sent back to Belize and delivered into the custody of Belize police.
Investigations by Belizean authorities however have verified that there was no need for the deportation since the Belizean passports that the men were using were indeed valid. The U.S. visas on the passports were also valid. Today a BEL spokesperson said that the company regrets that the mix-up happened and expressed gratitude that the employees are back home safely.
