Dr. Arlie Petters, he is a world renowned physicist at Duke University who has written a PSE guide for standard six students and trained young BDF cadets interested in joining U.S. military academies. Well now Petters wants to establish a computer assembly company in Belize – and he hopes to do it within the next year. He said as much on Friday when he met with the Prime Minister at his institute in Dangriga. Here are some comments from both men courtesy the Government Press Office.

Rt. Hon. Said Musa,
“The vision that he laid out a while ago, I think will put the country of Belize on the map and will put Dangriga in a very special way as the pioneer in the new Belize; a Belize of industry with science and technology at its base. He has laid out a vision first of all of providing a relevant education for our young people.

We are in that unique position where we can take full advantage of this man’s brain, of his human resource. We are a lucky people and Dangriga must be very proud of him, I know that Belize is extremely proud of you Dr. Petters.

The plan is to set up a computer assembly plant in Belize, the first it will be. We have little cottage industries already in our country where we people assemble computers; they buy the parts and assemble. But we are talking about bigger here, actually a plant that will create jobs for a lot of our people and it is the kind of jobs that as I said, clean industry that our government will give support and whatever incentives are necessary for this thing to work Dr. Petters, I want to assure you that that will be available.”

Dr. Arlie Petters,
“We are in the process of carrying out the research for it and we expect that this is something that will be doable within a year. We are going to be training young people, some from the computer course but also looking at kids from across the country who can participate in this. And we see this as a new line of really promising economic growth that gives a promising future for our young people.”
