Since January the Moneygram’s operation in belize has been rocked by money laundering scandals. Back in January the Coye family’s Money Transfer International, an agent for Moneygram, was busted for money laundering by the Financial Intelligence Unit. That was of course followed by the arrest two weeks ago of Dean Fuller, the owner of Moneygram’s former master agent in Belize – Omni Networks. Following the scandals, Moneygram quietly retreated – shutting down all its branches with exception of the Belize Bank. But that will change because yesterday Moneygram International re-launched. Regional Sales Manager Steve Higgins says that Moneygram remains the low cost alternative for wiring money.
Steve Higgins, Regional Sales Manager – Moneygram
“Moneygram is the second largest global money transfer company in the world which has prided itself in doing money transfers for the past number of years. We never really left Belize because Belize Bank has been a Moneygram agent for over ten years and you know they are a reputable bank.
We shut down our local agent. It is Moneygram that shut down so let me just correct that again: Moneygram ensures that we abide by every rule and every law and we are the ones who have to maintain our global presence and we have to ensure to every Belizean and every customer worldwide that their money is safe and so we guarantee our ten minute service but your money is always safe.
We have a number of new steps that we have taken. I will wait on your local authorities to announce them but like I said before, we worked with them and there is a lot that has been exchanged. We have a robust system now to ensure that we pick up these.
Make no doubt about it, if there is any hint of any suspicious anything, Moneygram reacts very quickly and I think your local authorities will bear that out.”
The new Moneygram super agent will be the Toledo Teacher’s Credit Union.
