Imagine for a minute, that it's two days before payday both your electricity and your light bill have promptly appeared in your inbox, and just then there's a letter on your desk.

It informs you that your pay will be late and doesn't indicate when you can expect to receive it.

That's just what happened to the employees of the Belmopan City council yesterday when they received memo that said quote: "We regret to inform all employees that salaries will not be deposited to your bank account by Friday, April 30th, 2021, On behalf of the City Council I extend my sincere apologies for the delay. We thank you for your patience and understanding." End quote. The letter was signed by City administrator Glenise Williams.

It's been a chronic problem ever since the municipal elections in March when the new council was elected with a massive mandate, but a zero balance in their account. Best reports say that the former council had been juggling all available revenue streams to keep operations going - and when they denied office, the tank was below "E". The council is now in it's so called "mawga season" because revenue streams from property taxes and trade license fees will not start coming in until the end the year. Reports suggest they have approached Central Government for some bridge financing.
