Tonight, a man is in the morgue after he was knocked down near mile 3 on the George Price Highway.
Just before 8:00, 53-year-old Chester Requena was walking along the highway to get to his home at Mile 4.
Now his family had often advised him against doing this - and their wanting proved prophetic last night when an SUV driven by a BDF soldier rammed into him.
He died on the spot and today, his sisters gathered to reminisce about him. One of them, Pearl Molina, told us her brother who was better known as Danto or Wine Man, for the wine he used to make, was an outgoing person who loved his nieces and nephews.
Voice of Pearl Molina - Sister of Deceased "I was at home folding up some clothes and then my sister called and told me if I looked at my phone and I said no and she said I have some bad news for you, your brother is dead. I said which brother, she said Chester but it took me a while to process it and I just sat there sitting and messages coming in and going out and after all that thinking I said yes it's true. Now they call him a street person, he bought things, he sold things, he made his wine, if people didn't have money he would just maybe exchange the wine and he would sell it and that's the way he did his life. He was a very fun person, a kind person and we could say that about the whole family, if he could help in any way that would be the big one, the children he had a blast with all of them, he would take them anywhere they wanted to go, he would come from my village in Silk Grass and he would pack them up and take them to the creek, takes stuff for them to snack on and sometimes he would bring them here to Belize and just have fun times with them and they loved that about him. All his nieces and nephews they have good memory about him that he was a very loving and caring uncle."
Reporter "When was the last time you spoke to him?"
Voice of Pearl Molina "That was about maybe 2 months in person, he went to my home for a short visit because he got news about some sickness and he just drop in and stayed the overnight and he left and that was it. Sometimes he would call on the phone and ask how we are doing and sort of things like that."
Requena did not have any children of his own. The driver of the SUV, 24-year-old Benedict Joseph Sabal, was served with a notice of intended prosecution.
