And Hyde also spoke about the advertisements from ASR/BSI to auction its fleet of barges - which it had used to send sugar to the Port of Belize. They are selling 6 tugboats and 33 barges - and it's a sure sign that sugar is not coming back to the city.
Hyde commented on that:
Evan Mose Hyde - President, CWU
"We've seen the advertisements for the auctioning off of the barges, I think about 15 of the barges. We know ASR is dismantling all infrastructure that deals moving sugar from Orange Walk to Belize City and so that is a level inversibility that is setting it when it comes to that. So whatever we are discussing here about trying to create a separation package, if we get everything that we would want and ask for in a negotiations, it's not going to be near what the total loss is going to be for every working person who has been working sugar when you calculate the years they have remaining to work the water fronts before retirement and the annual running that they get off of sugar that will be gone."
