And earlier in the news, you heard from Minister Anthony Mahler. He's just arrived back in the country after a week of meeting with new and existing airlines in different areas in Canada such as Toronto and Calgary.

The idea is to get more airlift into Belize, and thus increase the numbers of overnight visitors - who spend on hotels and restaurants rather than just take day trips.

Today he told us more about how those meetings went:

Passport Heavy and Belize

And Mahler is hoping the tourism product will continue to grow with Passport Heavy's newest video. He dropped it on August 7th and it features different areas in Belize. And the minister said today that influencers are an important part of building up tourism.

Two Traffic Fatalities

And back to police news, there were two recent fatal road traffic accidents. The first was a hit and run in Bella Vista that left an unnamed man lying in the morgue. The second occurred this morning when 37-year-old Nicholas Watson died after his motorcycle crashed into a guardrail on the Hummingbird Highway on the way to work. Today the Commissioner of Police spoke briefly about both:

Call Center Worker Stabbed In City

Tonight, 23-year-old call center employee Ryan Coleman is currently recovering after he was stabbed on Friday morning. Since then, police have arrested his attacker, 28-year-old Jose Velasquez. The ComPol explained today how the incident occurred and the charges that were levied on Velasquez.

Teaming up For Secondary School Scholarships

18 first, second, and third-form students at government schools countrywide will be going back to school this school year thanks in part to a partnership between the Embassy of Taiwan in Belize and the Office of the Special Envoy for Families and Children.

The scholarships and stipends were distributed during a ceremony on International Day of the Youth last Friday where both Ambassador David Kuan-Chou Chien and Special envoy Rossana Briceno shared inspirational words about the role of education in society:

Youths on Educational Inequality

And keeping it on education, last week, you saw what a group of youths had to say about the education inequalities and the uphill battle for Belizean students to access to the funds needed to pursue secondary and tertiary education.

Well, a part of those sessions between the youth policy writers and the government included consultations with Belizean high school students. The organizers wanted to get first-hand feedback from students, and here's what they told us in the afternoon session:

Cue in: Cue out:
