Cane varieties - if you're not a farmer you probably don't think too much about them, but they are essential for the continued survival of Belize's cane industry - especially in the climate change era.

And that's why ASR/BSI has teamed up with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center and the Green Climate Fund for their next project which seeks to diversify the stock of sugar cane currently in the ground.

That begins with identifying the different varieties and that was done this morning in Guinea Grass with the launch of a booklet on the 11 major varieties that have been tested in Belize - led by the dominant B79 - that's been going strong since 1979. Here's more:

The partners next move unto a 20 million dollar project from the GCF to secure funding to plant these varieties across the north.
