And those aren't the only buses that are coming to the highways. You've been hearing about electric buses for a while and you're probably wondering where they are - and whether they will actually come. Today the Minister said that while they were initially promised for the middle of this year, that timeline is going to have to be pushed back. But he reiterated that the year-long pilot project will benefit public officers.
Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport
"I believe those buses will come on stream maybe closer to the end of the year or early next year and we have agreed that we are going to utilize the western corridor and so we are saying if a bus is leaving from Belize City to Belmopan, first the pilot project will be for public officers from both directions at a reduced cost."
Reporter:
"And so after that you will expect them to start paying?"
Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport
"The pilot project is only for one year, and so after the one year, we will see what will become of the buses."
Reporter:
"This is being pushed back in my view every time or are we on schedule?"
Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport
"Not really on schedule because we're talking about June of this year but I know its an IDB I guess they are trying to source the buses so there may be some delay."
Reporter:
"Have you already worked out how the operators are going to benefit and run the runs themselves?"
Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport
"If one of the buses is running an operators' run, from the revenue from the buses that we're charging the public officers, that will become a subsidy to make sure he is benefitting."
