And the Minister wasn't at the ceremony today, but yesterday he and the prime minister, John Briceno, visited Neuland Mennonite Community in Corozal where a potential new port could be built. The port is in close proximity to San Pedro, and since the residents are looking for ways to improve their local economy, it could be a win-win situation. today, CEO Carillo told us more.

Kennedy Carillo, CEO, Ministry of Blue Economy

"I can't speak much about it, the minister will be able to share more information, but what I can highlight to you is that the prime minister, together with Minister Andre Perez, our minister of Blue Economy as well as the area representative for Belize Rural South had an exploratory visit to an area between Corozal and Orange Walk where the Mennonite community lives, I think it's called Neuland and they are exploring the possibility of a port that will not only serve to transport passengers from that northern part of the country to San Pedro, but also cargo. We know that there is a very important link between San Pedro and the north through construction workers, but also the transportation of fruits, vegetables and so it's something very exciting and it really does demonstrate in deed that as a ministry of Blue Economy, we're looking at opportunities to also better the lives of those persons that live on the island such as San Pedro and Caye Caulker."
