The Belize National Postal Service is stepping up their game and going online. Today a launch ceremony was held for their Domestic speedmail digitization service where persons will now be able to access all their package information online. Jomarie Lanza was there and here's what she reported.

With the world of advanced technology at our fingertips, Belize's national postal service has now joined the realm of digitization. Customers will now be able to access an online system that will provide them with real time information on packages being shipped both domestically and internationally. It is a long overdue upgrade for the post office, one which the Postmaster general says has been in the works for sometime but is now up and running thanks to their ministry.

Marsha Price, Postmaster General

"Well we like the CEO mentioned the financing was the aspect and now we have the support of our ministry that is allowing us or financing us to have these sort of applications that the customers have been requesting for years so that is something that is though it is now available now all our process have been manual so this is one of them we can track internationally but nothing domestically so this helps out customers and it will pull more customers so it is something that we so desire."

"Visibility, people want visibility within the post office network so that is important for customers and we have more upcoming things that customers have been requesting to help out customers."

The shipping process remains the same, only now, customers will be able to see the status of their packages online. No more need for calling in and bombarding the clerks about where and what time their package will arrive at its destination

Xeina Schnarr, Postal supervisor

"Today we are launching the digitization of the domestic speedmail which is our domestic express. This digitalization is basically, now you don't have to go to the post office let's say you have twenty packages and stand in a line and wait for a receipt you can just drop off those packages because now with this system you will automatically get a text as the sender and the receiver will also receive a message and with real time tracking telling you that you posted it in Belize City and let's say you are sending it to San Pedro. You will get a message saying that you posted it the time we process it and the time it leaves office when San Pedro receives it and when it is ready for delivery or pickup."

"Just like As you address a regular letter the sender's information which includes the name and address whatever district and the phone number it is the same thing for the receiver's information it is the same thing just like how you address a regular letter."

The system uses Google API to track its packages, and today we got a step by step tutorial on how the system works and what information is provided to the customers.

Belize National Post Service Employee

"What will happen is when the item comes into the post office the item is given a barcode. The individual then comes to the app, where it is, then entered into, whereby the sender name, address and phone number which is very important. The phone number is very important. it is an imported into the system. Once that is completed, both the sender and the receiver is going to get a text with a link telling them exactly everything about their package cost the destination the expected time of arrival all that information is there. So basically what will happen now in terms of moving the item through the post office we will hand it over from one post office to driver and the driver hands it off to the other post office so it seems that at every point where the item stops there is a scan and the customer knows what's happening with that package so they know when the package leaves for example San Ignacio to Belize city. They brought the package at 9 AM and at 1 PM that package is moving so they know the package left at 1 PM. by 4 o'clock in the afternoon the packages in Belize city they know that it is ready to be picked up so they have enough information so they can schedule when stopping at the post office because they now know when it is there they don't have to be calling and asking when my package will be arriving. When can I go and pick it up there will be step-by-step information about their package throughout the whole process."

The service is live now.
