And those overnight arrivals may see an even bigger increase once the high season comes back around. But for Belize's number one destination San Pedro, they're still barely holding on to their 26 year old submarine cable - which provides the island with electricity. Without a more stable source of power, it could be trouble when the hotels start getting booked with tourists. So far, the gas turbine that was assembled on the island still hasn't powered up and is almost 3 months behind schedule.
Today Mahler said all he can do is pray.
Courtney Menzies:
"With high season like two months away, San Pedro is still holding on to that 17MW submarine cable, the gas turbine still isn't online, is this a major concern for you?"
Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism
"Well let's just say I started going back to church."
Courtney Menzies:
"Especially, I want to say too, because during the festival I think they had to shut off some parts of the island because there were so many people there during the festival."
Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism
"I have my toes crossed."
