He was an older man who did low intensity security work, watching the H.D. Thompson quarry off mile 32 on the Western Highway. And 72 Year old Walter Usher wasn't known to get in anyone's way until sometime last night when he was savagely butchered to death, most likely by someone he knew and trusted. Alfonso Noble has been following the story and he has more in this report:

Alfonso Noble Reporting

The body of 72 year old Walter Herman Usher was found this morning sometime after 8 inside this house at a quarry at mile 32 on the Western Highway. Police say that Usher was stabbed numerous times causing him to die inside the house.

Sgt Sinquest Martinez – Investigating Officer
"He was seen up to yesterday evening and this morning a friend of his went to visit him. This is when he came across the body of the deceased. When he went at the scene he was at the farmhouse with multiple stab wounds. He might have been killed during the course of the night, of last night. The body was still fresh. We took him to the Belmopan morgue where it awaits a post mortem at this moment."

Police say it is possible that Usher was stabbed inside the house and left there to fend for himself. As is evident by the numerous blood-soaked rags that are inside the house, Usher may have tried to tend to himself before he finally succumbed to the injuries.

Sgt. Sinquest Martinez
"I guess he might have been trying to save his life but apparently the wounds that he had received, there are two that might have caused his death, the last two. The last two stab wounds that he got."

Alfonso Noble
"How many in all did he receive?"

Sgt. Sinquest Martinez
"He had several stab wounds."

Alfonso Noble
"To which area of the body?"

Sgt. Sinquest Martinez
"There were to his abdomen. There were to his neck, his chest."

Now investigators as well as family members are trying to ascertain who killed this caretaker. For the family one thing is clear, the 72 year old was killed for one reason and one reason only, robbery.

Nephew
"He is not a person who would do anybody anything like that. Maybe they just wanted to rob him for something he had or something of the sort. Because he is not a trouble man. He never tried to trouble anyone as far as I am concerned. We did not grow up that way."

Sgt. Sinquest Martinez
"Two shotguns, 12 gauge and a 16 gauge shotguns were stolen from the house. One the gun had been sawed off. We found two butts. We found a barrel so the barrel of the other gun was not cut there. So they take that along with them. So all this happened after the deceased died. They commit the murder on this farm, do what they had to do and they left."

Nephew
"That's destiny man. We just have to deal with it. I guess that's the way the Good Lord wants it I just have to go over there and see exactly what is happening you know."

In consolation, that's one way of looking at it, but for police there are no easy explanations, it is a case of murder and robbery, and they are intent on finding the person that did it.

Initial analysis shows that usher was stabbed to the stomach, chest and neck.
