He's ten, he has leukemia and on Friday afternoon he almost lost his right eye after a circus horse kicked him in the face. At around 3 on Friday afternoon Jevon Mahler, like many kids his age, attracted by the animals of the circus, went to see the show. But instead of seeing it, he almost lost one of his eyes. He was at the city center looking at the horses when one of them kicked him in the face. He made a dash for home and his mother told us what she saw:

Patricia Lanza – Mother
"He went over to the civic to look at the animals. And he says that some little boy pushed him into the animal and that's how he managed to get that. He told me that the horse was not tied. It was a white and brown horse and it just kicked him in his eye and he just got up and started to run. He says the horse began to come after him again. When I looked in his had he had a lot of horse hair in his hand. He says he just ran home. He ran home bawling. When I rushed out I saw him awash in blood and two cuts were on his eye and a piece of meat was pushing out. So we had to rush him to the hospital and they admitted him and stiched his eye and kept him in for two days."

"A friend of mind went over and the boss was not it. The following day he went again and the boss told him that he has nothing to do with that. I think they should have those animals tied up or in a cage."

"I don't know what I'll do because I don't know if he will be able to see or what because I think I will have to take him to an eye specialist. That is a cost and I am already in an expense with him with this lukemia because every two months I have to find 2 thousand dollars to take him to Merida. It is only his family that are helping him with this lukemia and with this now it is another problem for him."

Patricia Lanza says that she has not yet sought legal advice as it will incur further costs to her which she simply cannot afford, being a single mother of three. She says doctors still have to ascertain if Jevon will be able to see out of his right eye.
