The holiday weekend's first murder was recorded even before the 19th in La Democracia Village when a reputed criminal was executed in his front yard Thursday night.
Police say the victim 49-year-old Hansel Smith was home along with his common-law wife Carol Lamb when 5 men stormed their house. Lamb told police it was around 8:30 when Smith went outside after he heard a knocking at the door. Next Lamb said she heard a gunshot and when she went outside she was ambushed by the five men; 4 of whom were masked and the fifth who only donned a gun. Lamb says the men demanded money and when she refused, she was pistol-whipped. Before fleeing, the men looted three cell phones and three gold chains from the house.
Hansel Smith died while undergoing treatment at the KHMH while Carol Lamb was treated and released. Police say they have one suspect detained. Hansel Smith has been accused of crimes in the past ranging from rape to murder.
