The killing of Oscar Velasquez is one of the most shocking murders ever reported in Belize. On Thursday, the 4 year old's body was found stuffed in an abandoned refrigerator with his hands tied and an electrical wire around his neck. At the time, he had been missing for three days, and it is believed he was killed on Monday, the first day he went missing. Today, the 13-year-old male neighbor accused of killing him was taken to court. The teenager was read a charge of murder and remanded until March 18 at the Boot Camp at the Hattieville Prison.
As we've noted the young man and his older brother who is 14 have a long and unfortunate history of social abuse and neglect. He made the news a few months ago when he was raped, beaten and left for dead in a churchyard by a recently released prison. In this case, investigators believe he lured the child, who he was familiar with, into the house. He advanced state of decomposition could not determine whether there had been sexual abuse.
