Flamboyant Romanian National Robertino Oprescu will have to wait until the end of the month to face a judge and jury. The 36 year old is charged with defrauding more than $500,000 from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital through bogus companies that he set up called Bustitich and Imperium.
Jury selection began today and Oprescu showed up at court with a handful of documents. Oprescu planned to represent himself but presiding judge Michelle Arana advised him that due to the seriousness of the crime, she will adjourn the case to allow him time to retain an attorney. The case is now set to begin on Tuesday November 29th. The prosecution plans to call 20 witnesses and chief among them will be Tricia Mak. She was the secretary of one of Oprescu's bogus companies who was implicated in the fraud. Oprescu was on the run for two years until Mak saw him at the bus terminal and called police. Oprescu is on remand at the Hattieville Prison and is also wanted in his home country of Romania for fraud.
