He may be the first murder of the New Year, or the last of the old, but the killing of 34-year-old Russian national Alexei Goloubev is certainly the first mystery for 2006, there are no clear motives and no immediate suspects for the King's Park murder. So who killed this foreign paralegal who had been working in Belize's offshore sector? That's what I tried to find out today.

Alfonso Noble Reporting,
The decomposing body of 34 year old Russian national Alexi Goulobev was found inside this house sometime around 7 this morning by neighbors who became concerned when they didn't see him after Saturday evening.

Lisa Aguilar, Neighbor
"We saw Alex just before 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon."

Alfonso Noble,
What was he doing?

Lisa Aguilar,
"Just going to eat a tuna sandwich. He had come from the shop where he bought tuna and bread."

Since then neighbors who had grown accustomed to seeing Gulobev on a regular basis had not seen him. They missed him on Snday in particular as he was to have attended a gathering at his neighbor's.

Lisa Aguilar,
"Sunday he was supposed to come over to eat barbecue so we sent somebody to check the house but nobody answered so we left it alone. And then he went to check again this morning but the landlord was checking on him and same time he was out here so they all went to check and they found him in there. He was already dead. They said they found some stabs in his neck back."

Police suspect Goulobev died inside the apartment as a result of those injuries. Their investigation into this will now continue to try to determine who it was that took Goulobev's life.

Goulobev had been living in Belize for the past 8 years and had been employed as a paralegal in a legal offshore services company in Belize City. Police are asking anyone with information on this killing to call the 0-800-922-TIPS hotline.
