There are thousands of live births every year in Belize but in the media the first is always a special event. And that's because the appearance of the first child, is the purest kind of luck, it can't be planned, nor predicted. So it's a kind of modern magic, the luck of the reproductive draw...who won this year? I went to the hospital to find out.

This morning, we found 20 year old Mirna Hernandez looking over her child at the intensive care unit. She was today a particularly happy mother because hers was the first child of the New Year at the KHMH. She was admitted to the hospital on Saturday and had her baby at 1 on New Year's Day.
Mima Hernandez, Mother
"I had him by C-section so that's why told me that no doctor was there so on Saturday they transferred me to Belize. I feel happy and I can't say nothing else. I just feel happy that I have a baby and that's it."
For giving birth to the first baby in the New Year, San Cas today presented a box of diapers and a hamper to the new mother. Aisha Trapp says this is a way of the company taking on its corporate responsibility.
Aisha Trapp, San Cas
"San Cas does this to continue our social responsibility to our community that has been serving us for over seventy years. So it's just a way to say thank you for their continuous patronage over the seventy years we've been serving this community."
Hernandez was today discharged from hospital but was unable to take her baby boy with her as he will be kept at the hospital for a few days for observation because he has an irregular heartbeat.
