On November 22 of 2002, Fabiola Mendez, then twenty years old, was arrested and charged for knocking down and killing bicyclist 41 year old George Lewis as he rode his bicycle on Vernon Street near its intersection with West Canal. Today in the new session of the Supreme Court, her trial concluded. Mendez now 22 years old pleaded guilty to causing death by careless conduct when she appeared before Justice Troadio Gonzalez. In sentencing, Gonzalez pointed out that the maximum penalty for the offence was 2 years in jail but he did not impose that. He instead opted to fine Mendez $3,000 because she does not have any previous convictions. She was given until March 10th to pay the fine. If she doesn't, she'll have to serve 9 months in prison.
