And while the city was still recovering from the shock of Friday night's murder, hours after that killing there would be another. Early on Saturday morning, 57-year-old Delhart Castro was walking from Hicatee Street onto West Collet Canal when he was approached by a gunman who placed a gun to his head and killed him. Tonight, there is no clear motive for the killing, but Alfonso Noble went looking for answers.
Alfonso NobleReporting,
Sometime around 3 on Saturday morning Delhart Castro left home and walked up Hicatee Street. By the time he reached the corner of West Collet Canal a gunman opened fire. His friend Stephanie says she had just seen him minutes before the shooting.
Stephanie,
"I went inside to watch TV and by the time I went to change the channel, he was in the yard talking to the Spanish boys them who were drunk. They told him to drink some wine and he told them he doesn't drink wine and he told them he was coming back right now and less than five minutes after he went up the street I heard 'bow,' but I didn't expect it was him so I don't pay it any mind and I just continued watching TV and I told my daughter that was a gunshot. After that, about 20m minutes after that, the police came. I never expected it to be him because he had just left from here. He doesn't bother anyone. He is a peaceful man; from work to home and from home to work and he doesn't bother anyone. He treats all the pickney around here good. He buys things for them when he gets paid and thing so it was a surprise the way how they killed him; that was a surprise. If they had even beat him or break his foot you can live from that, at least he would still be here, but he didn't deserve what happened to him. He didn't have any enemy."
That sense of bewilderment is the same that his family has. His stepchildren say they have no idea why anyone would have wanted to kill him in such a manner.
Stepchild,
"The family doesn't really know what happened to the man but the man got gunned down in the street and he just died like that and the man didn't have any real problem in his life that we knew about. The only problem the man had in his life was this next lady, a 'joe grind,' thing. Otherwise than that he was straight and if he owed anyone or had problems with anyone, he would have deal with it because he is a man who is afraid of death; that is how we know him. We feel for the man because the man was somebody you could talk to, he gives good advice and he stopped you from doing fool and he sat down and listened and tried to understand people. Everybody here will miss the man because the man was straight. We miss the man and we grieve over his death because the man didn't have to dead like that. So we want the people to know that the man has people for feel for his death."
Stepchild #2,
"This man was a highly respectable man. Everybody knows his as Mr. Chick, he is a well known man, who were shocked but we didn't believe until we went to hospital and went to the morgue and we went to see and that is how we believe so we don't know who could have done something like this. We are still in shock. We didn't know that he had problem with nobody, enemy with nobody, we don't know him as that type of person. We just know him as a nice man."
Stepchild,
"I just want the people or whosoever did that, we would want to know they killed the man like that."
And while the family believes "Joe" may be the motive, police investigators are not looking in that direction tonight.
Police are investigating but have no one detained.
