He tried to burn down granny's house and today a Belize City fruit vendor was arraigned on that charge. In September of last year, 27-year-old Glenroy Mcleary a fruit and vegetable vendor was accused of attempting to set his grandmother's house on fire and it was not until Tuesday of this week that the police finally caught up with the accused arsonist.
The charge of attempted arson arises from an incident in which Mcleary is accused of attempting to set his grand mother, 73-year-old Zetora Johnston's Barracat Street house on fire. Johnston reported to police that at around 1:15 on September 12 of last year she was awakened by the sound of breaking glass. When she went outside, she was told by her son that her grandson had thrown a molotov cocktail in a green stripe rum bottle into her house. The fire was put out by Johnston's son while the culprit rode off.
In court today Glenroy Mcleary told Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord that the incident was due to a land dispute and that the property has been sold and his grandmother is no longer living in the country. He was offered bail of $1,000 and was told to return on April 28.
