Intelligence suggests that more than a few fancy rides seen profiling on Belize's roadways may be of questionable origin. And whether stolen from Central America or North America, the U.S. is determined to cut down on trafficking of stolen rides. This week, the U.S. Embassy arranged training for Customs officers to clue them in on the tell tale signs of stolen vehicles. Much of the training centered on spotting vehicle identification number that have been tampered with.
As part of the exercise vehicles inside the Customs compound were used, and during the exercise it was determined that three vehicles in the Customs compound had altered VINs. It was later confirmed that they had been stolen from the U.S. The investigation into the origin of two other vehicles is ongoing.
