And while a murder is not good news, CIB chief Chester Williams says the Logan killing is the first in Belize City in nearly two months. He attributes the calm on the streets to new initiatives undertaken by his office. He told us more.
ASP Chester Williams,
"Whilst we had the murder of Mr. Logan last night, it was expected because for almost two months now, which is historical in Belize, we haven't had a murder on our hands in the city and this is credited to good police work and good community relationship. We have been working diligently along with the community in trying to curb criminal behaviors in the city, especially crimes that are committed with firearms and we believe that they have been doing a very good job at it. The community has been more supportive of the police.
We are trying to get as much help as we possibly can from the business community in trying to curb the crime situation. After all, we've always mentioned that crime is everybody's business. It is not only the police's business, it is also the community's business and we have been getting the support from the community. They are more understanding now what crime is all about and they are very helpful to us."
ASP Williams says that businesses now have a logbook in which officers will sign when they visit. A senior officer will visit the various business establishments weekly to verify compliance.
