On Sunday July 3rd 2005 a pickup truck knocked down 7 year old Skyler Sanchez and left her for dead on the northern highway in Hattieville Village. But she did not die, a month and a half after her tragic accident which left her in a comatose state, Skyler recovered. She is still recovering but still has problems with the right side of her body which she does not have complete control of. While her recovery is good news what is not is that the person who knocked her down was never found, at least not by the police. Now Skyler's mother Floreth Requena says that the police have returned to her the bicycle that Skyler was riding at the time when she was knocked down and she has been told that the case is closed.
Floreth Requena, Mother
"This officer called me and told me come for the bike. I want to know why I received the bike, if the case is still open or shut. He told me that it is closed because they haven't arrested anyone. The man still exists out there. I am not asking him for anything. He hasn't called me up to today. Right now Skyler still has difficulty, every minute she still drops and that hurts me because I want to send her to school right now. She won't go back to standard one, she will go to infant two. What I want to know is why the case is closed."
Alfonso Noble,
Do you know who it was that knocked down Skyler?
Floreth Requena,
"Up to now yes. I have the name and everything. The vehicle still exists in Manatee. The vehicle is in Manatee."
Alfonso Noble,
Do the police know this?
Floreth Requena,
"I told the police but then I am not seeing them doing anything about it. Nothing is being done about it. I just want them to find the man and charge him because yes people still want to follow up about Skyler and everything. They want to know what is happening with her and how she stands. Yes I thank God for putting her this far and up to now I still have it in God's hand but then this man still exists out there.
If I didn't know the person, I wouldn't care, I wouldn't mind. But then this lady came when I was coming from my work, at 5:30, the lady touched me on my hand and said this is what the man name is and this is where he is. This is what I don't understand. Why the police are asking for assistance from the public and later on they turn around and are like they are not appreciating the assistance from the public."
Our information is that because the incident is more than likely a criminal offence there is no statute bar on it. Meaning that if and when a person is found they can be charged for hitting Skyler down.
